Helen McDonald Paintings and Photographs, Brighton Artist

HelenNow based in Brighton, Helen McDonald is a graduate of Chelsea College of Art & Design, where she studied for a BA hons degree in fine art (painting) 1995-1998. Prior to this she lived in North Kensington, London and studied painting and photography at Kensington & Chelsea College.

“I have always had a fascination with night time photography and the experimental nature of capturing light.  I now use a digital camera.  With the paintings it's not so immediate, the two relate but there's a layered involvement in the process of making the paintings - which allows for time and suggestion and other things to happen in them.  Sometimes they are inspired by a photograph or a simple object and in the process of painting they develop, ideally to become quite autonomous.  Although something figurative is used to hang the paint on it’s not about what that might be.  I love the paint for what it is and only loosely use it to draw – allowing it to suggest a story and allowing it to breathe - leaving room to imagine…”

The paintings are a combination of oils and/or acrylics on canvas.  The photography, printed on either photographic paper, sizes 20"x16", 12"x12" (cropped) or 10"x8", or as a giclée print on archival 300gsm Fuji Fine Art Smooth paper at 20"x16".

Prices for photographs:  20”x16” £74.50, 12”x12” £53.00 and the 10”x8” at £49.50.  20”x16” giclée prints are £140.00.  Mounting can be arranged.
